Just bought a DSLR but don't know how to operate it? Got tired of using Auto or Creative mode? Wanna take awesome pictures but don't know whats the correct settings? Clueless of what is 'Aperture' or 'Shutter Speed'? Well fear not people, me & the rest of Fusion Origins Photographers will be organizing a workshop specially to cater newbies like you.

'Master Your DSLR Workshop' will be held a Windbell Restaurant Tg. Aru KK on the 26 Sept 2010. A workshop that is different from others, we will touch on the fundamental basics on how to use a DSLR camera. Learn what are those little knobs on the camera, how to get correct exposure, judge your picture exposure using the histogram, understand the basics of 'Rules Of Third' and many more. We will also show a glimpse on how to setup an indoor studio. Payment for the workshop is RM200.00 for early birds(before 11th Sept 2010). On the door payment during the actual day of the workshop will be RM250.00. Breakfast & Lunch will be provided. Please bear in mind that seats for this workshop are very limited. An impromptu portrait session with 2 lovely lady in one day. Talents: Ms. Shirley & Miss Queennera. A session partly organized by my FOPian Mr. Ashley Daniel Koh and also Mr. Boyd Tahing. Lembah Impian Country Resort was chosen as the shooting location. Now i know why a lot of soon to bride & groom choose this place as one of their pre-wedding shooting location, the place is just beautiful.

Some of the pictures shown here are edited using Adobe Photoshop CS5 and some using Lightroom 3. I had a enjoyable time editing using Lightroom 3 but struggling with the CS5. I guess im better off with CS3. Click here for further info on Lightroom. Here you go, pictures from the session. Enjoy!

Borneo Motorsport Carnival 2010

Cars, cars & beautiful girls? Well thats what audience got during the Borneo Motorsport Carnival held at Sabah Port (next to Jeselton Point). Organized by Kinabalu Sports Car Owner Club (KSOC), there lots of cars on display during the 2 days event. Ranging from high-end imported brand to heavily mod Perodua & Proton cars. Other attraction was the drifting performance by our local drivers & 2 pro drifters. Drift king & queen of Malaysia Azrina Jane Cheah & her husband Ariff Johanis Ahmad of Team Good Year Malaysia specially flew in to show us KK people what drifting was all about. Also present was Minister of Youth & Sports Datuk Peter Pang. another attraction that even the boys couldn't get their eyes off was the final of the Borneo Motorsport Race Queen. I was lucky to be one of the official for this years event. Yeah i know, cars + hot girls = ? Well you all do your own math on this one aigts?

Private Session: Finalists Of Borneo Motorsport Race Queen Search 2010

I had a rare opportunity to have a portrait session with the finalist of the Borneo Motorsport Race Queen Search together with my fellow FOPians, Kelvin Casey Chin & Manchew. The shoot was held at one of the hottest club in KK at the moment, Firefly KK Times Square.

The difficulties i faced during the actual shoot was the place didn't had any decent light around it. To add salt to the wound, the shot was held on a Saturday night. I guess you pretty much can imagine how was the situation at that time, lots of people walking around the set. As you will see the picture later, me & the rest had to resort to 'strobing' the models to get a decent pictures. Luckily pretty much like the pictures that we got from that night. So does the organizers of the event. Phewwww!

Kotobian Tadau Tagazo Do Kaamatan(which means Happy Harvest Festival in Kaadazan). I know its already June but who cares. Still recovering from tons of litters of you what. It's drinking season(for some of us) here in KK. So this is the only time that you get to use your birth rights (as a kadazan/dusun/murut) as an excuse to drink like there is no tomorrow. But sadly, i had attend to few official matters during the 2 day holiday. Oh well, maybe during Xmas. That is like 6 months from now. *Sigh*

During this time, you may hear wedding bells ringing every time you pass by a church, or see a car nicely decorated for a wedding on the road. Or even hearing some couple getting engaged somewhere. 'BELUKAR' Gala Night Premier

Few days ago i attended the charity gala premier 'Belukar' @ GSC 1Borneo. It's a indie film telling a story about a female con artist who falls in love with a investigator of an insurance company, who is hot in his trail catching her red handed. Kota Kinabalu & duty free island of Labuan was picked as the main location for the movie. The star studded cast includes of our very own Daphne Iking, Bront Palarae, Azhar Sulaiman, Danny X-Factor, Sabrina Hassan, Ray Redzuan, Sharmila Dedy Borhan and Ekin & Yassir of Akademi Fantasia. FYI, the last four names are Sabahans.

The movie is directed by actor turned director Jason Chong, who shot the entire film in digital format. Jason did a indie good job by bringing in local indie band such as Love as Arson & Gerhana Ska Cinta for the movie OST. This movie has little bit of everything to it. It has it's thriller elements, the love story, and also has its comedic side. Pretty much a good movie (considering it being an indie film) but still there is still a lot to be done from my point of view. But still i give it a thumbs up!

Borneo Motorsport Queen Search 2010

What happens when you mix pretty girls standing beside a fully mod Impreza or a Fairlady? Craziness, am i right? Yeah, that's what i got when i covered the 'Borneo Motorsport Queen Search event together with my wingman, Casey. A beauty pageant with cars. Organized by Kinabalu Sports Car Owner (KSOC) @ 1Borneo Hypermall. What could be better than watching pretty girls standing next to a Impreza or a Fairlady? No words could describe it.

Cars that was on display was the legendary Nissan Skyline R34, Subaru Impreza, the new Nissan Fairlady (and yes, the ones used in Fast & Furious: Tokyo Drift). But the sad part was couldn't manage snap some decent profile close up shots of the cars due to the way the car was parked and there this silly 'barricade' place around the cars. Oh heck, there are still pretty girls to snap. So here you are, pictures from the event.

Maybank Charity Drive: SK Don Bosco, Ranau

I had the opportunity to cover Maybank's Charity Drive to SK Don Bosco. Situated in the heart of Bundu Tuhan, Ranau where the climate was pretty much, COOL. This was my second trip up there i was pretty much excited because this time around i had my camera with me. Im a bit unclear of the history of the school, but as far as i know it's a refuge for the children staying there. Some of them are orphan. The kids there were treated with fun games & KFC meals. Other than that important necessity like food & clothes were also given to them courtesy of staff & management of Maybank.

This is a wedding that shall remain as a very special yet challenging one for me. For the 'Akad Nikah' (marriage contract) ceremony was held at the state mosque in Likas. The architectural design of mosque was astonishing. Sadly i did not manage to snap the beauty of mosque to show. Maybe in the near future perhaps. Now back to the this post.

I was invited by one of my fellow FOPians(Mr.Boyd Tahing), to join a photo shoot organized by friend of him Mr Rahim JR Matnin. I think it was ages ago since my last model photo session. So was kinda nervous but at the same time i was also happy cause i get to try out new technique & also brush up some old one as well.

Taman Peringatan Petagas was selected as the venue for the shoot. It was my first time going there. DBKK did a very good job in taking care of the place. Brief history lesson, it was said that the place was constructed in remembrance of the Australian, British soldier who died during the Japanese invasion. May they rest in peace.

It was fun shooting the talents: Fharini & Lynda. Both of them never been to an actual photo shoot. At first they were a bit shy, but after while they started to loosen up and the rest as they always say (in the movies) is history. Thumbs up to both Fharini & Lynda. They were awesome! My first entry of the year 2010. I know it's has been 3 months since my last blog. Was away for such a long time, some of you wondering where am i. There was few day job matter & other family/personal matters that hindered me from finding any time for my fingers to touch the keyboards. The occasionally 'Not In The Mood To Blog Syndrome' was also one of the culprit why i did not blog much for the last remaining months of 2009. No point forcing yourself to do something if you're not in the mood. You can't really force a brilliant idea to come out sometimes. It will just appear out of no where and hits you right in your face!

2009 was a blast for me in terms of photography. My highlight for 2009 was meeting my high school idol, Radhi of OAG. I also met a lot of interesting people from the gigs i got. So much had happened,i bet 2010 gonna be another interesting year for me. Looking forward to wedding that I'm covering coming February. So as they always say in the movies, BRING IT ON, 2010!

580EXII - The Bigger, the Better...

The 430EXII was my first upgrade during my early days in photography. At that time I was confuse whether to buy the Tamron 18-200mm lens or to get the 430exII flashgun. But luckily after few 'consultation' session with few seasoned shooters, i decided to buy the flashgun instead. And luckily that time i had extra $$$ to get the BG-E5 battery grip plus additional battery. For a full spec explanation on the 430exII click here.

Armed only with 18-55mm kit lens, i was able to get more 'natural' looking shots. This is due to the swivel & tilt action that the flashgun is capable of doing. Which allows me the bounce off larger surface like bouncing off a white ceiling or a wall. It also made my camera looked 'fit' (together with the battery grip). When i switch my lens to a faster lens (my Sigma 24-70 f2.8), the result got even better. Then after a series of weddings & club events, i then realize the 430EXII speedlite was lacking few things.

So last month i bought the 430EXII bigger & more powerful brother, the 580EXII. The reason why i bought the 580EXII :-

The 430EXII Flash head moves up/down from 0 to 90°, left from 0 to 180°, and right from 0 to 90°, while the 580EXII allows an additional -7° down and a full 0-180° rotation right. This means i can practically bounce almost everywhere using the 580EXII.
The 580EXII has a built-in reflector/bounce card. The 430EXII only have the built in diffuser. (Thou bounce the card issue is not really big problem for me cause i custom made my own bounce card).
The 580EXII is more powerful than the 430EXII by 1/3 stop.
The 580EXII can be used as both Master & Slave unit flash. 430EXII only can be use as Slave. Meaning to say if you have a 580EXII, you can trigger another (or a few) 430EXII speedlite.

I still keep my 430EXII as backup. Sometimes i get question from friends, asking me 430 or 580? Well if $$$ is not the matter then go for the 580EXII. Otherwise if you treat your interest in photography as hobby, 430EXII will do just fine. Eventually those who started off using the 430EXII will upgrade to the 580EXII sooner or later. Just like me (*wink).

Time travels really fast....

At last some breather. Done all the post processing and gave the DVD and the prints to the clients. Seeing their big smile on their face after receiving the DVD and some of hard prints even make my day worth while. Hope they like it thou (fingers cross..)

As i was doing some spring cleaning of my room (which i hardly do), i stumble upon a tote bag. Inside it contains a few boxes, one of them used to housed my camera when i first bought it. Then i realize, OMG it's already a year im using this camera and i went so far with it. Wow! As you scroll down, here are some few stuff that i found inside the tote bag..

1st, my lousy 'complementary' bag from Fotomat. Here's a picture of it now.

You can never trust a 'complementary' bag if you're serious about photography. It just won't last. As you can see the clip is already broken and the "Canon" badge is falling off from its place. Replaced the 'broken' bag with this bag, a rip-off version of Lowerpro SlingShot 200AW bag. It is the china-made bag called 'Fancier'. I did not like the feel of the bag but due to financial problem at that time, didn't leave me with a lot of option.

Thank God for giving me weddings & events to shoot, i was able to replace the bag with my current bag, the Kata D-3N1-20 3 in 1 bag which i just recently bought.

As i continue browsing through the stuff inside the tote bag, i stumble upon a very familiar 'friend'.

It's my kit lens or some of friends call it the 'Kitty Lens' (laughs). The old 18-55mm f3.5-5.6 lens. It very light & indeed easy to use. It did lot for me during my early days in photography. I did manage to shoot an engagement, few weddings and a model test shoot with this lens. Good old chap. But sadly as i learn new techniques along the way, i found out that some of the technique i learn my kit lens can't do, or could not produce the result i wanted. So i upgraded my lens to a Sigma 24-70mm F2.8 lens which now i use extensively when ever i go out for events or photo shoot. This lens has open the window for me to create more creative shots. Maybe i'll use the old chap for upcoming family gathering.

As i was almost done cleaning, i found my receipt my camera. Dang! It's already been 1 year.

Never could believe myself that i really went so far and learn alot about photography. Hope it will never slows down in coming future, as i need to cover more events to achieve my next target, EOS 7D. Till the next posting then. Chau!

Where else you can find our very own local singers take part in a competition, showcasing their talents, thousands of screaming fans, and judges who will give their feedbacks/comments to the contestant? Sounds more less like American Idol, don't you think?

That's what happened on the 17th of April 2009 at KDCA Penampang, where Kadus Entertainment organised KE's Next Top Entertainer. The stage was nicely done and the lighting system was fantastic. Live video feed projected on 2 separate screens. All 10 contestant was giving a hell of show to the crowds. There was also performances by Da'Prinz, Richado & the band Jiaja, who was introduce to the crowds by our very own DJ Othoe. The winner & also the 'Most Popular Contestant' went to Carey Oliver. Feraddy Okuling was 1st runner-up while Alfred Valentinus took 3rd placing.

500D & D5000

Canon's 500D & Nikon's D5000 has hitted the shelves of Photomat today and I've got the chance to test both camera at the shop.

Canon & Nikon really giving it all with their latest addition, aiming the upper-level entry market. Both spotting video recording capability in High Definition. The 500D uses a new 15.1mp CMOS sensor just like the the 50D, where as the the Nikon D5000 uses 12.1mp DX sensor. Canon embedded it's latest DIGIC!4 inside the body 500D body while the D5000 uses EXPEED processor. The D5000 records 720p HD movie @ 24 frames-per-second, for up to 5 minutes. While the 500D can record 29m 59sec(maximum file size is 4GB) in 1080p HD. Both manufacturers did something extra with the 3" size LCD. The D5000 flipping it in style with the 180º tilt/swivel LCD screen in which, is kinda handy if you're taking above head shots or over the crowds or even below the waistline type shots. 500D showing it off with it's Anti-Reflection VGA screen, very useful during a sunny day or bright lighting condition.

The feel of holding the D5000 was very nice compared to the 500D though the 500D have the same leather pading grip like the 450D. Maybe im used to the Canon grip(is that a sign that i should be using Nikon instead of Canon?) But D5000 is slightly heavier & bulkier than the 500D. Maybe due to the larger battery that Nikon uses for this particular model. Both almost similar in size. Now for the samples snaps.

The first 3 pictures is taken using the D5000 using Nikkor AF 18-55 VR lens. Apparently i don't have the sample pics for the 500D. Think i accidentally deleted the pics, Ooopps! Will post the sample pics of the 500D a.s.a.p. Note that all this pics below are unedited, only resized for fast uploading to the blog.

Hooorahhhh!!!! Just got my new ‘toy’ today. A Sigma 24-70mm F2.8 DG MACRO lens. Been waiting for this one to arrive since last week. But why Sigma some of you might ask. Why not Canon’s 24-70mm F2.8 L series lens? Well obviously the killing price tag off course. RRP for the lens is RM5,495.00 (as per advertised in shashinki.com). If I were to save up all my salary & surviving the whole month with Maggi & Indomee, it’s still not enough to own the lens. Haiii….so I look for other alternative. That is Sigma!

Before this I’ve used Arthur’s 24-70mm Sigma lens on my past assignments. I was surprise & hooked with the quality & the performance of the lens. Pictures taken using this lens was excellent though the images goes soft on the edges @ f2.8. Focusing is surprisingly fast. But when focusing, the motor puts out quite a lot of noise & can be a nuisance if you’re doing weddings or corporate function.. But overall the lens performs well. You can google the lens & check the reviews from other people over the WWW. A HSM(Hyper Sonic Motor) version of the lens is also out on the market but a bit pricy than the ones without HSM. FYI, HSM is Sigma’s own version of the USM(Ultra Sonic Motor) by Canon.

It’s not that I’m against buying original lens or accessories, it’s just that $$$$$ is not on our side all the time. If you’re into photography seriously & for living & having that extra $$$, then invest buying the originals. But if it’s only for fun, then no harm for you to buy those third party products. They won’t be as good as the originals, but as long it gets the job done.

Welcome people! Still a newbie for this kind of stuff. And yes you can say abit outdated. Coz all this while for me the internet is only Facebook, Maybank2u & my emails.

What made me to blog? Well a lot of my mates have their own blog, writing bout events, food, peoples to everything. Then one day 2 of my good mates approached me: "why don't you start your own blog n instead of write bout something, put your pictures here n who knows?". At that same time i also just started learning photography. Then i said to myself yeah why not? So after months n months of R&D, finally i happy to say i'm on my way to the world of blogging.

Photography is my new hobby. Actually i like photography at a very very young age. My father owns a Yashica Manual Camera(not sure of the model) when i was 6 but only started to fiddle with it when i was 10, coz my father did not want his son (back then very curious one) to play around with his toy. I thought it would operated just like the 35mm fully automated camera, then later i found out it was manual. So basically all my pictures were blur. Not happy with the result so i was back using 35mm cam. Not long my dad bought a new camera to replace his Yashica. It was a Canon SLR camera but i forgotten the model & It has a auto focus system. I have to wait 3 months for him to fun with his camera . It was a good camera but it got stollen when my dad was on holiday in KL with my mom. Again was very sad n back to my mom's 35mm Canon. Held a Nikon SLR camera back in 2004 while i was attending my cousin's wedding in Kuching. I was using my cousin's (and again forgotten bout the model) SLR cam but it was a film SLR. But really i had fun with it n took a lot of good pictures with it. My cousin was also happy with the pictures i took on her wedding day & advised me to get my own DSLR considering the fact film SLR is getting unpopular with the crowds. So after 4 years then my dream came true, bought my first SLR. Canon 1000D with the kit lens. I owned a P&S Canon prior to my purchase of the 1000D but i ruined the LCD. Long story.......
